Two Amazing Naan Pizza Recipes
Naan is an Indian flatbread staple that is enjoyed by many in restaurants all over the world! It is comprised of flour, water, yogurt, and yeast and cooked in a tandoor oven. Because most of us do not have a tandoor oven in our homes (I wish!), the bread is luckily available at many Indian or South Asian grocery stores as well. Considering its thickness, it can serve as an excellent choice for pizza crust. Therefore, we decided to create two mind-blowing naan pizzas with ofcourse, an egg on top! Presenting our Italian Turkey Sausage Pizza (left) as well as Fig With Sausage and Burrata Pizza (right).
Italian Turkey Sausage:
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tbsp fennel seeds
½ lb ground turkey
1/2 tbsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
In a large saucepan, heat oil to medium high heat. Add the fennel seeds and let them sizzle for 1 minute. Add ground turkey and break up into small chunks. Cook for 3-5 minutes until no longer pink.
Mix in the Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper, salt, and garlic powder. Add in ¼ cup of water and reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Homemade Pizza Sauce
½ onion, diced
3 tbsp of olive oil
3 Heirloom tomatoes, diced
1 tsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1 tsp fresh thyme, finely chopped
1 tsp salt
½ tsp red pepper
½ tsp garlic powder
1 tsp Italian seasoning
½ cups water
In a medium saucepan, heat oil on medium-high heat. Add in the diced onions and sauté until onions are translucent (5 minutes). Add in the heirloom tomatoes, rosemary, thyme, salt, red pepper, garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Sauté for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Stir in ½ cups of water and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 10 minutes.
Creating Naan Bread Pizza
Prep time: 15 minutes (sauce and sausage)
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Chop the bunch of scallions and set aside.
Remove naan breads from packaging and defrost if necessary. Begin by spreading your homemade pizza sauce on two of the naan breads while leaving room along the perimeter for your crust. Spread 3 tablespoons of fig spread on the remaining two naan breads. Divide the burrata into 16 dollops with a knife and place even amounts on all 4 pieces of naan. Add Italian turkey bits to all pizzas and finish by sprinkling basil. Cook in the oven for 7 minutes.
You will now be adding on the egg and can skip this step if you are not a fan of egg on pizza. Remove the pizzas from the oven and crack open the egg onto the top of each naan. .
Pro tip: It is always helpful to have a spot in mind for the egg when assembling so you can leave a shallow hole to insert it in. This will avoid losing some of the egg white in the process!
Sprinkle the desired amount of scallions onto each pizza. Place the pizzas in the oven and cook for 8-10 more minutes until burrata is melted and egg white is opaque or no longer transparent.
Remove from oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving!
